| Regional Water Coalition Update
October 25, 2006
Earlier this year, seven area water utilities formed the Southern Maine Regional Water Coalition (for more information about the Council see links below). Here is an update on the Council's recent accomplishments.
1) Chemical Purchasing Program - This cooperative program now involves over 20 water and wastewater utilities who would otherwise be purchasing treatment chemicals on their own. Significant savings are being realized by combining chemical needs into one annual bid. This program may be expanded for the purchase of other high volume/high cost water utility essentials such as water main pipe and accessories.
2) Mutual Aid Agreement - The seven utilities now have a written agreement, outlining all of the details (procedures, communication, liability, costs, etc.) for assisting each other during emergencies. We hope that this simple, but comprehensive agreement (See Agreement) may become a template for other utilities and municipalities.
