| Multi-Purpose Plant Facility
Scott Minor, Assistant Superintendent
As mentioned in the recent issue of our newsletter, "What's On Tap", construction has begun on an innovative pumping treatment and recycling facility at our Route 1, Kennebunk Filtration Plant. The facility's pumping and treatment functions relate to the facility's ability to process up to an additional 3 million gallons per day (MGD) of well water, either by sending it to the existing filtration plant to augment the Branch Brook supply or by treating the well water and pumping it directly into our distribution system. The recycling function relates to the facility's ability to recycle water used for filter backwashing and any other excess water produced as a result of plant operation and maintenance activities.
With the exception of some soils and structural analyses performed by outside consultants, the complete project is being designed and administered in-house. In addition, all site work, piping, plumbing, wiring, controls, chemical feed systems and interior finish are being performed by District personnel. Outside contractors are being utilized to install sheet piling (beginning 2/27/06), construct the building shell (beginning 3/6/06) and for some assistance with miscellaneous carpentry details.
The total cost of the facility, including the placing into service of four new wells, is estimated at $1.1 million or around $0.36 per gallon per day. Comparative projects have been known to run double that amount or higher, translating into a good value for our ratepayers for years to come.
Over the next few months, feel free to revisit our web site for update reports and pictures as this interesting project progresses.
