| District Settles Taxation Issue with Sanford
August 15, 2005
As recently reported in the local news media, the District has reached an out-of-court settlement with the Town of Sanford over the issue of taxation of District property acquired for watershed protection. For detailed background information, see News Archives - Taxation.
During the past several months it had become increasingly obvious that successful protection of the Branch Brook watershed in Sanford can only occur with active cooperation and open communication between the Town and the District. With both parties expending tens of thousands of dollars fighting a battle that has no legal precedent in Maine case law, a win / lose scenario in the courts between the two parties would certainly not foster such an open and cooperative relationship.
This Agreement successfully addresses the concerns of both the District and the Town, while setting a solid foundation for a cooperative, long-term relationship that best serves the interests of the Town of Sanford, our Water District and the Branch Brook Watershed.
