| The York Interconnection (Excerpted from KKW's Winter 2004 newsletter, What's On Tap) Chris Silke, District Engineer
We have signed a unique Interconnection Agreement with the York Water District whereby each utility can help supply the other with up to one million gallons of water per day (1 MGD) during certain times of year. This arrangement will help offset our late summer deficit when customer water demand peaks and flow in Branch Brook declines. What makes the agreement a good match is that YWD can experience an insufficient water supply during the winter months, generating a situation similar to ours but at a different time of year. The arrangement can be modified at a later date to provide for higher flow rates as they become available. It has also been tailored to fit well with both utilities' existing Emergency Response Plans.
In addition to the installation of over three miles of 16" water main along Route One (which was installed earlier in 2003 by YWD), the project involves the construction of two pump stations. These two facilities, one on each side of a hilly area along Route One, will help assure adequate water pressure to the area regardless of the direction of water flow.
As an economical alternative to acquiring property to site an above-ground pump station structure, the District is installing an underground vault within the Route One right-of-way. Construction for our pump station kicked off in December with the placement of the vault assembly (shown in picture) and underground piping. The interior mechanical and electrical equipment is scheduled for installation over the next couple months. YWD's pump station is scheduled for construction during the Spring of 2004.
Designed and built primarily by in-house personnel, this economical facility can be easily expanded as needed. Construction cost, ease of maintenance, efficiency of operation, safety, and landscape aesthetics are fundamental considerations given to all of our projects.
